Children's Photography
- Photographing A Child's
Imagination The Easy Way!

Let’s face it; children's photography is quite a lucrative business especially when you have a little known secret up your sleeve. The kind of secret I’m talking about can put an extra one hundred thousand dollars (and much more) in your pocket every single year.

The problem is just about every photographer has no idea about this little secret.

So I’m going to reveal it to you right here in this article.

Now listen closely because it’s important you understand that from birth all the way to becoming a young adult are the years parents will want to have a photo album of their baby girl or boy growing up.

And you know what? The standard patterns for photo session bookings appear to be newborns, when they turn six-months old, a year, two, three, five, ten, thirteen, and sixteen years of age. On the rare occasion this pattern may extend to eighteen and even twenty one years of age.

Don’t forget the top holidays such as Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas are all good times for family photos. All these portrait opportunities can add up to a very nice income.

Here’s the thing... imagine if there was a way to increase the amount of sales, particularly during the early childhood years where a child's parents may not usually bring them in for their portraits?

Here in this article you’re going to find not just one, but three exceptional ways you can make a whole lot more money with the same clients. And the best part is it won’t cost you much at all.

The first way is an imaginative use of a question all children get asked at some point in their childhood. That question is – “What do you want to be when you grow up?"

This question typically leads to the answers - doctor, fire-fighter, policeman, astronaut, and cowboy or cowgirl. We like to ask children this question as a way of encouraging them to dream of an exciting future for them.

And here’s the kicker… Wouldn't it be inventive to have a picture of the child dressed up as their favourite profession?

Here's the best way to do this:

  • Don't create expensive sets or print up some location backdrops. The easy and most profitable way is to simply set up a green screen that you will take the child's picture in front of.

  • The next thing to do is to have the child dress up just like they would look if they were in their dream job. The sort of things you should have in stock are things like a fireman's helmet, a cowboy hat, and a doctors mask with plastic stethoscope for example. Simply take the child's portrait, then use simple chroma key software to place the child in the different environments so the parents can choose which photo's they want to buy.
  • And guess what? Here’s another way to make use of a green screen and offer another unique portrait opportunity. Ask the parent to bring in something the child has accomplished that they are very proud of. I like to call this the "show off" tactic.

An example might be a drawing or painted… something they should be proud off.

Let’s say it is a picture they drew… create a digital background where it looks like their picture is on display in an art gallery. Take the child's portrait just as if they are standing proudly next to their own exhibit. If they are into being a sports superstar, take a picture of the child with them leaning on a wall that is covered with green screen.

When you use the chroma key software to add a backdrop, have the child leaning against a giant football (or other sports item) - or to make out they have won a championship and see than leaning against a huge version of the trophy.

Lastly, remember to use themes to your advantage!

What I mean by this is, find out what the child's favourite book is. Do some initial research and see if there is any way you can place the child inside their favourite story. Let’s say the child is into "Lord Of The Rings" or "Narnia", use striking outdoor scenes that feel like they belong to the book or movie.

If you were doing a "Harry Potter" photo session be sure to use old English streets, or pictures of the interior of old college hallways.

Should you decide to be enthusiastic and use your imagination, you will find the sky is the only limit when it comes to creating a unique children portraiture… especially when using a green screen.

Getting started with using a green screen and it's accompanying chroma key software doesn't have to be difficult or expensive.
